Ungifted by Gordon Korman
Genre: fiction
Reading difficulty: easy/medium
Overview: This story is full of great characters and has a lot going on. It is the story of Donovan, who gets himself into a lot of trouble when he accidentally destroys the school gym. Instead of getting suspended, however, he mistakenly ends gets sent to the gifted academy. He thinks its a good place to lay low until the gym can be fixed...if he can make it without anyone suspecting he is UN-gifted! What I liked about this story was how Donovan used his own strengths and ended up teaching a few things to the gifted kids. I also liked how Donovan changed his own attitude at the end. I also liked how the robotics competition turned out! What did you think?

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane

Genre: fiction/adventure/fantasy
Reading difficulty: easy
Overview:
This story is easy to follow and a quick read. It follows the journey of a selfish toy rabbit who starts his life spoiled and rich. He falls overboard on a boat and ends up going on a series of adventures - each one helping him to open his heart and learn to love. What I liked about this story was; how time stood still for Edward, because he was a toy. I also liked how each person who owns him had a different adventure. And...even though Edward was kind of awful in the beginning, by the end I was hoping he would find a family to love. What

The Boundless by Kenneth Oppel
Genre: action/adventure/fantasy
Reading difficulty:medium
Overview: The action in this story begins with an avalanche and ends with one. In between...well, it is the non-stop adventures of , a gifted artist and his circus friends. They are all trying to stop a robbery on board "The Boundless", an enormous, state of the art train, as it heads across Canada on its maiden voyage. I found the book exciting and action-packed with a few unexpected twists and turns along the way. What did you think?

Stay where you are and then Leave -John Boyne
Genre: historical fiction
Reading difficulty: medium/hard
Overview:
This is a story about Alfie, a boy who is trying to get along while his father is off fighting the First World War. Life changes for Alfie when his father and most of the men he knows sign up to join the army in 1914. His mom goes to work and he decides to do his part by shining shoes. He discovers information about his father and has to make some tough decisions. This is a more serious story about life in the First World War. It might be a good idea to talk with your family about some of the major events of WW1 before reading this story. I am always very interested to see what children's lives were like in other times, so I was very interested in this book. I thought the way the author wrote was easy to read, but had a lot of language and vocabulary we might not be familiar with in 2016. There were parts that were suspenseful and I even cried a bit! But overall, it had a happy ending. What did you think?
The Secret of Grimm Hill by Laura DeMeulemeester
Genre: suspense, supernatural
Reading difficulty: easy/medium
Overview:
This is a fast-paced book about Cat Peters, a girl who is starting a new school in a new town and is having trouble fitting in. She thinks that the answer to her problems is to win a scholarship to the private school on the hill, Grimoire. She decides to try out for a chance to compete in the big soccer game and win the scholarship. At first, everything seems to be going great. But things get more and more strange until Cat is forced to admit that all may not be as it seems at Grimoire.
I really liked this book because it was suspenseful right up to the end. The characters are also interesting and there is some humor as well. What did you think?
