Welcome Back

Welcome back!  We are very excited to begin a new year in the Library.
All classes are scheduled for a library book exchange time.  Students come to the Library once a week and are able sign out 2 books and can keep the books for 2 weeks.  After that,  you will receive an email reminder.  This is an automatic response and if there is an error, please feel free to contact me.  Kindergarten students may take out one book each week.  Studies show that even in the intermediate grades; structured, supported time reading each night is essential to ensure success in school.  So cuddle up and read, read, read!
Bookfest is up and running,  students are signing out books to take home.  Bookfest members are required to read 6 of the 8 books that are on the list this year.  We will have our first meeting next Monday.
I am always in need of parent volunteers to help shelve books.  If you have any time (waiting for your child before the bell rings at the end of the day, for example....) 😼 Please feel free to pop into the Library to do a quick tidy or shelve a few books!📚

Thanks!

Please return lost books!

Any books that have not been returned to the Library have been marked 'lost' and fines are due.  Please note that if a book has been previously marked 'lost' it will not have shown up on the recent reminders (which was just for overdues), but will be shown on this letter.
A receipt will be issued on payment.   If the lost book is found, please return to the library and a refund will be issued. I understand that despite our efforts, some books will have been returned and not been checked into the computer.  If you believe this to be the case, you are encouraged to come and double check the shelves.  If you are unable to pay fines due to financial restrictions, please come and talk to me.  I will also take a ‘like-new’ book as a replacement.

Time to Start Returning your Books!

ALL BOOKS DUE BACK TO THE LIBRARY BY JUNE 5.

Yay for Art

As Jason Craft has inspired us by his mural, I thought it would be nice to have a chance to do some art ourselves!   We are going to open the Library up to students at lunch times you to come and do Art.  Mrs. Murden is excited to come and work with on some lessons with you!  We are trying to link books with the projects....as we are in the Library.  You will be able to work on their project throughout the week and we will do a new project each week.  This will be open to Primaries and Intermediates but there will be a limit to the number of kids in the Library at one time.  Stay tuned for more information!

Ungifted by Gordon Korman

Genre: fiction
Reading difficulty: easy/medium
Overview: This story is full of great characters and has a lot going on.  It is the story of Donovan, who gets himself into a lot of trouble when he accidentally destroys the school gym.  Instead of getting suspended, however,  he mistakenly ends gets sent to the gifted academy.  He thinks its a good place to lay low until the gym can be fixed...if he can make it without anyone suspecting he is UN-gifted!   What I liked about this story was how Donovan used his own strengths and ended up teaching a few things to the gifted kids.  I also liked how Donovan changed his own attitude at the end.   I also liked how the robotics competition turned out!   What did you think?

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane

Genre: fiction/adventure/fantasy
Reading difficulty: easy
Overview: This story is easy to follow and a quick read.  It follows the journey of a selfish toy rabbit who starts his life spoiled and rich.  He falls overboard on a boat and ends up going on a series of adventures - each one helping him to open his heart and learn to love.  What I liked about this story was; how time stood still for Edward,  because he was a toy.  I also liked how each person who owns him had a different adventure.  And...even though Edward was kind of awful in the beginning, by the end I was hoping he would find a family to love.  What did you think?

The Boundless by Kenneth Oppel

Genre: action/adventure/fantasy
Reading difficulty:medium
Overview: The action in this story begins with an avalanche and ends with one. In between...well, it is the non-stop adventures of , a gifted artist and his circus friends. They are all trying to stop a robbery on board "The Boundless", an enormous, state of the art train, as it heads across Canada on its maiden voyage.  I found the book exciting and action-packed with a few unexpected twists and turns along the way. What did you think?

Stay where you are and then Leave -John Boyne

Genre:  historical fiction
Reading difficulty: medium/hard
Overview:
This is a story about  Alfie,  a boy who is trying to get along while his father is off fighting the First World War.  Life changes for Alfie when his father and most of the men he knows sign up to join the army in 1914.  His mom goes to work and he decides to do his part by shining shoes.  He discovers information about his father and has to make some tough decisions.  This is a more serious story about life in the First World War.  It might be a good idea to talk with your family about some of the major events of WW1 before reading this story.   I am always very interested to see what children's lives were like in other times,  so I was very interested in this book. I thought the way the author wrote was easy to read, but had a lot of language and vocabulary we might not be familiar with in 2016.  There were parts that were suspenseful and I even cried a bit!  But overall,  it had a happy ending.   What did you think?

The Secret of Grimm Hill by Laura DeMeulemeester

Genre:  suspense, supernatural
Reading difficulty: easy/medium
Overview:
This is a fast-paced book about Cat Peters,  a girl who is starting a new school in a new town and is having trouble fitting in.  She thinks that the answer to her problems is to win a scholarship to the private school on the hill, Grimoire.  She decides to try out for a chance to compete in the big soccer game and win the scholarship. At first, everything seems to be going great.  But things get more and more strange until Cat is forced to admit that all may not be as it seems at Grimoire.
I really liked this book because it was suspenseful right up to the end.  The characters are also interesting and there is some humor as well.  What did you think?

Looking Forward to a New Year in the Library!

We have had great year in the Library this year!  I would like to acknowledge all our library volunteers,  but especially Mrs. Schrader and Mrs. Cruikshank who have been so consistent in their commitment to the Library!  We have new furniture, rugs, books and two new computers.  We have been culling old, outdated or undercirclulated books.  We have had contests, special speakers, artists, authors and even owls visit Fairview Library this year.  We have held a bake sale and raised over $500 for orphaned wildlife in our area.  We have also had a flood, water damage and computer glitches. :(  I have been very proud of everyone who has brought back overdue books.  I am looking ahead to the coming year with anticipation! Over the summer,  we will continue to work on streamlining our collection of non-fiction books, as well as getting ready for a new season at school and reading the new batch of books for Bookfest.   Over the summer,  I will send out a short overview of each of the Bookfest books, as I read them.   These will appear on the main posts of this blog. Have a great summer and happy reading!

Club Red starts off with a bang!

We were pleased to have author and poet, Barbara Nickel, at our school to kick off Club Red.  She is a prize winning author of  two intermediate novels, a picture book, and two works of poetry.  She is a local author living in Chilliwack with her husband and two sons.
She came and did a fantastic presentation of her latest book  "A Boy Asked the Wind".  She also stayed and did a special Poet's Toolbox for the intermediate students who were able to start a poem using similes.  As well, we now have signed copies of all her books in our school library!
It was a great presentation and a great privilege to have the chance to interact with a real author.
A job well done to the Bookfest kids who led the assembly and introduced the author.

Owls in the Library

We kicked off our month long study of Owls with a visit from the Orphaned Wildlife Society (O.W.L.S.) She did an amazing talk on raptors in our area, showed us many hands on items and brought two live birds to show us. It was very interesting and the students learned many new facts about owls.  We will be hosting a number of owl themed events for the month of January for teachers to participate in such as:owl pellets and owl stations!

Bookfest Movie-the 33

We had a great time joining all the the other bookfest students in our school district to watch the movie: the 33. This movie was based on the true story of the Chillean miners trapped underground for 3 months in 2010.  This movie was suspenseful and heartwarming! The theatre applauded at the end!

Bookfest - permission slips due!

We are going to see the movie "the 33" on Monday November 1st.  Please make sure your permissions slips are in by Friday!
This movie is directly related to the book When the Worst Happens by Tanya Llyod Kyi, the author that will be speaking at Bookfest this year.  Should be fun!
